EAST LANSING, MI β With the start of classes at Michigan State University less than a month away, the school says it has accelerated employee layoffs, which it says are mostly due to a decrease in federal funding and increases in operating costs.
MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz told Media Partner 6 News in Lansing this week that there will be more layoffs. Officials are still trying to figure out exactly how many jobs will be lost.
βIt is painful that there will be some positions eliminated as a result of this budget reduction process,β Guskiewicz told WLNS.
Rising employee health care costs, inflation, and less money from the federal government have MSU in cut mode. The school hopes to reduce its general fund by 9% over the next two years, according to WLNS.
