LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The state’s first case of eastern equine encephalitis, or EEE, has been confirmed for 2025 in an unvaccinated horse in Benzie County.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development says all animal owners need to protect them against mosquito bites, with state veterinarian Dr. Nora Wineland saying there have been six human cases this year of West Nile virus.
EEE is a disease that can be transmitted by mosquito bites to both humans and animals, but cannot be spread between them.
Cases of the disease normally happen in late summer and early fall, and while horses have a vaccine, there is no vaccine for people.
