LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A group of Native Americans who fought in the Civil War might soon be recognized in Michigan.
State Representative John Roth says he is working to honor Company K, which was a Native American group of sharpshooters.
He says it is “long overdue, and we need to get it done for them.”
Roth says they served the Union in the Civil War “before they were even recognized as citizens and in some cases, some have said even as humans.”
Bills have been introduced in both the House and Senate to dedicate part of M-22 as the “Company K Indian Veterans 1st Michigan Sharpshooters Civil War Memorial Highway.”
