LANSING, MI — The venerable Don Johnson Fieldhouse in Lansing has been hosting athletic activities for nearly 100 years, but now a new funding plan – included in the state’s recently passed FY2026 budget – could have the facility in line for major renovations, according to a report in the Lansing State Journal.
The building, which was built in 1926, was purchased by the Lansing School District in the mid-1970s when then Lansing Eastern High School’s principal Don Johnson championed the purchase. The district bought the fieldhouse, which was later renamed. Now a one time allocation of $1.2 million for renovations has been included in the state budget, according to the newspaper.
The state funding will also support the expansion of the Lansing Student Development Program. In all, some $5.2 million will be given to the program.
