EAST LANSING, MI — Michigan State University’s Board of Trustees has authorized the administration to proceed with the demolition of the IM West facility, approving a $6.9 million project budget at its meeting last Friday, February 6.
The decision clears the way for the removal of the Intramural Recreation Sport West building, located at 393 Chestnut Road, following years of planning and evaluation. Once demolition is complete, the site will be restored to green space, according to the school.
Constructed in 1958, IM West has long exceeded its useful life, according to the school. Operational cost was cited as a key factor driving the decision. The facility’s outdoor pool was previously demolished after maintenance costs became unsustainable, and the building itself lacks modern ventilation, energy efficiency, and climate control systems.
The new Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC) on Harrison just south of the Breslin Center, expected to open later this year, was designed as the replacement for IM West.
