EAST LANSING, MI — The Big Ten conference’s annual blood drive is coming at a good time. The American Red Cross last week issued a blood shortage alert saying summertime blood supplies are nearing an all-time low as demand for units of blood surges.
The Big Ten Conference and health care company Abbott kicked off the We Give Blood Drive on Wednesday. It’s a friendly competition across the conference for a chance to compete for a $1 million grant by seeing who who garner the most blood donations.
The timing of the competition is good with MSU students back on campus this week. Classes begin on Monday. Any blood donation between Aug. 12 and Dec. 4 can be submitted online to count toward a specific Big Ten school.
You can even follow a live leaderboard on the Big Ten’s site to see who is leading the competition.
