HASLETT, MI — Haslett High School Principal Brandy Butcher has been selected for the 2026-27 Gerstacker Fellowship at Saginaw Valley State University. She is one of 12 educators from school districts and intermediate school districts across Michigan named to the program’s 20th cohort. SVSU will induct the cohort this evening at its annual Gerstacker Fellowship Symposium in Curtis Hall, according to a press release.
The Gerstacker Fellowship is a yearlong leadership development program for teachers and administrators. Fellows meet throughout the year for intensive sessions on leadership, organizational culture, communication, educational policy and decision-making. In spring 2027, the cohort will travel to Sweden, Finland and Estonia to visit schools, universities and cultural institutions and compare those systems with Michigan’s.
According to the press release, Butcher redesigned the school district’s mentor program for new teachers as her project in the Horizon Leadership Academy, another learning opportunity provided through the Michigan Association of Superintendents and Administrators (MASA). She launched the program in summer 2025 with a two-day training for mentors, and it includes ongoing learning for both mentors and new teachers.
Haslett Public Schools serves about 2,600 students in five schools. Learn more at www.haslettschools.org.
