Mama Tu-Tu’s real name is Wanda Beavers, though few people call her that. She is 59 years old. She is friendly and outgoing and she laughs a lot. She works as a home care aide and has a cleaning service.
Mama Tu-Tu invites people to sleep at her house when they have nowhere else to go, though sometimes they just want to use her bathroom to wash up and that’s fine, too. She equips kids with backpacks at the beginning of the school year. She feeds people who are hungry. On the Fourth of July, she hosted a picnic in her backyard because a homeless man told her he hadn’t had barbecued ribs in years. Hundreds of people attended the event. Volunteers provided food and helped cook. She cooked for people in need on Thanksgiving. She plans to do the same on Christmas.
She was Jackson’s Citizen of the Year in 2010. A couple months ago, she received an award for her volunteer efforts from the City of Jackson’s Human Relations Commission.
