JACKSON, MI, (WKZO AM/FM) – Consumers Energy says it is mobilizing crews across Michigan following severe weather that swept through the state Monday afternoon, bringing strong winds, heavy rainfall and widespread power outages.
They say approximately 200 crews are working overnight to restore service to 50,000 customers, with additional 140 crews on standby as another round of severe thunderstorms is expected to move across the state Tuesday afternoon into the evening.
Crews are assessing damage, including downed power lines, broken poles and other impacts to electrical infrastructure.
“Our top priority is the safety of our customers, communities and crews,” said Norm Kapala, vice president of grid operations. “Our teams are working around the clock to restore power as quickly and safely as possible while continuing to assess and repair damage across our system.”
As of 10:00 p.m. Monday the largest number of outages were in Allegan County with 8,190. Van Buren County had the had highest percentage of customers without power at over 23%, or 2,032 outages.
Kalamazoo County had 2,964 outages.
