EAST LANSING, MI — East Lansing officials say they have found a unique way to crack down on illegal parking across the city. It plans to move forward with a solar-powered camera system that is designed to catch drivers parking in no-parking zones across the city.
The city is using a company called Municipal Parking Services for the program, deploying the company’s “Safety Sticks.” The solar-powered cameras will be placed in no-parking zones. The system will target problem areas that see repeated violations.
The “Safety Sticks” can read license plates of vehicles, but only when a violation is detected, said officials say.
When a vehicle is parked in a no-parking zone for longer than 90 seconds, according to the city, the device photographs the license plate. Once the photos and the violation are confirmed by the city, a citation is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle in question.
