The Philadelphia Union agreed to transfer defender Olwethu Makhanya to Scotland’s Rangers F.C. on Thursday.
The 22-year-old South African center back had one goal in 42 MLS matches (36 starts) for the Union from 2025-26.
Makhanya was Philadelphia’s first-ever U22 Initiative signing after arriving from Stellenbosch FC in July 2023.
“We greatly appreciate Olwethu’s contributions in his three years with the Union,” sporting director Jon Scheer said. “He has grown tremendously since joining the club and proved himself to be impactful on our backline. We believe this is a great opportunity for Olwethu as he continues to develop, and we wish him all the best in this next chapter.”
Makhanya helped the Union win the MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2025 and was selected to South Africa’s roster for the World Cup earlier this summer.
