LANSING, MI — David Hollister, who led the city of Lansing as mayor from 1994 to 2003, died on Wednesday. He was 84.
Hollister began his career as a social studies teacher at Eastern High School and then rose to be a state legislator before being elected to three terms as mayor. He later became head of the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth under former Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
Hollister is credited by manay in helping prevent General Motors from leaving mid-Michigan. Lansing’s “Save GM” campaign under Hollister united civic leaders in a successful effort to convince GM from closing operations in the city.
In adiditon, his vision for rebuilding Michigan Avenue evenutally resulted in minor league baseball coming to town and a stadium built on Michigan Avenue. The Stadium District in downtown Lansing now boasts a grocery store and apartment buildings surrounding the stadium.
